Desserts I Will Never Eat
Vintage recipe books are fabulous. There's something about the photographs. They're color saturated to the point of nausea. They attract. They repel.
The names of some of the desserts are charming. This one is called Strawberry Sunshine Pie. I don't want to taste it, but the name is very cheerful.
This Date & Nut Cake should go down the garbage disposal immediately. And you can toss those creepy Chrysanthemums in too while you're at it.
And this one is the worst of them all. Ingredients include lime peel, green food coloring, whipped cream and melon balls. The name? Seafoam Canteloupe Pie. I couldn't make that up if I tried.

Love it! I thought I was the only one who appreciated the horrible pictures (and recipes)in old cookbooks.
I can't say any of these appeal to me either!
Wow. And here I thought those dated "Microwave Cooking" books were the worst. Those desserts look toxic!

Haha! I love those old cookbooks for exactly this reason. The colors! So toxic-looking and nauseating and yet strangely attractive! That last pie recipe reminds me of this thing my mom made when I was a kid. It combined orange jello, whipped cream, shredded cheddar cheese and walnuts...it was Tang-orange and so weirdly delicious!
Why? Who came up with these? A dessert hater? Reminds me of those weird jello desserts with foreign objects suspended in them.
Nightmares for me tonight.
My grandmother was famous for trying out pretty much any dessert recipe (and they were all pretty great) - she'd have never touched any of these, though.
I used to think there was not a dessert on the planet that I wouldn't eat. Now I know better.
